Ian Banja was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. The self taught artist is fascinated by the close examination of ordinary objects and placing them in an unusual context. While his subjects are diverse, Banja is repeatedly drawn to portraits and the everyday encounters his subjects find themselves in. In his Struggles series, the artist depicts the habituous hustles of his peers, as he states “I try to express the everyday tussles I witness, the stories I have are never ending”. Ian Banja is creating worlds within worlds through painting small windows as clues into his inner psyche. His upbeat street style paired with detailed technical and aesthetic consideration offers the viewer a glimpse into the near future.
