As a leading voice on contemporary African art, Ebenezer Samuel Akinola's body of work asks us to step into the metaphysical realm where the body becomes an inscription, or archive. 'The Master's Gathering' becomes a way to challenge stereotypical archetypes prescribed to African communities and Black identity. In a largely ontological context, this solo exhibition becomes a masterclass in marrying tangible, physical representations and subject matter with abstraction and mythos, imbued with a critical gaze that recenters sexuality, race, gender and political ideologies, the wreckage of colonial modernity is called into question and reinvigorated through form and spiritual intent. In an era where global capital fragments communities and commodifies the sacred, Akinola’s figures gather against dispersal, against rupture, against the violent erasures of history.
Lien Botha's solo exhibition with Eclectica Contemporary is one that reinforces the ways photographic mediums, and its subject matter, can be pushed to grow beyond it's confines. Botha's focus on terrain, landscapes and spatiality offers a reanimated stance on the notion of space and seeing Africa as an urban space that is fixtured by incidental moments of human interaction, thus situating the viewer in a careful push and pull between "figure" and "ground" as a means of navigating space from the perspective of humans growing up, and sensing spatiality around themselves. Botha is a seasoned artist, writer and curator, offering introspective conversation through art that evokes human nature and the human ability to connect the terrain of Africa with figurative gestures, and pinpoint cosmic alignments within the landscape that feel out of time.
With a proposition that is centered around Identity, space and belief systems, Thando Phenyane’s first solo presentation interprets and responds to the nuances that exist in navigating blackness that are framed in “Black Skin, White Masks” by Frantz Fanon. Fanon’s work offers a profound map of the psychological terrain shaped by colonization and its lingering effects on the Black psyche.
