'The Master's Gathering' becomes a way to challenge stereotypical archetypes prescribed to African communities and Black identity. In a largely ontological context, this solo exhibition becomes a masterclass in marrying tangible, physical representations and subject matter with abstraction and mythos, imbued with a critical gaze that recenters sexuality, race, gender and political ideologies, the wreckage of colonial modernity is called into question and reinvigorated through form and spiritual intent. In an era where global capital fragments communities and commodifies the sacred, Akinola’s figures gather against dispersal, against rupture, against the violent erasures of history.
