Project Description

Sue Greeff

Sue Greeff is a Cape Town based artist. In 2012 she began her studies at UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art, where she later graduated as a painting major in 2015 with distinctions. Her practice is contemporary and conceptual, often based on ideas and experiences from her earlier careers in both the Medical and Interior Design worlds. Sue draws connections between seemingly unrelated ideas and visually explore these, to and understand hidden relationships.

Through her multifaceted body of work, Greeff contemplates and confronts the boundaries of understanding, acceptance and illusion, working across midgrounds and transitions – with memory and experience

ARTIST STATEMENT:

The background to my focus and interest in birthing, death, biology and genome editing is drawn through a personal history as a midwife, my pregnancies, births and subsequent raising of my children. All of these experiences have led me up to this point to a shifting and questioning of the latest breakthroughs in genome editing and its technology.

The exhibition acetone veil although a slight departure from this terrain, was stimulated by the recent Kavanaugh trail and is a more personal reflection on the sociological and political implications that hegemony and misogyny have on womxn and their bodies in the 21st Century.

The artworks for this exhibition; largely oil on canvas and ink on latex interrogate the notion of this patriarchal culture. My use of latex is not only a signifier for sexuality but alludes to the seductiveness of this largely ‘veiled’ terrain.

Drawing inspiration from art historical references and iconography borrowed from popular culture seen in Television series like the Handmaid’s Tale, Instagram and news footage of protests, my visual language confronts the audience with questions around the silenced voice and anonymity of women in a world predicated on patriarchy and the subsequent exploitation of womxn and their reproductive bodies.

Whilst these are no simple answers, viewers of this exhibition are encouraged to participate in one of the major conversations of our time. The works and my art practice have been created to present a challenge to the viewer to consider and stimulate further thinking on not; ‘what we want to become’ as a responsible society but rather; ‘what is it that we want to want?’ – Yuval Noah Harari
