Matter Becoming Language

This summer exhibition brings together four artists whose practices span sculpture, painting, posters, and conceptual wooden constructions. Across these varied mediums, each artist interrogates how material can act as witness, memory, and message.

Lars Fischedick presents precise wooden constructions that sit between sculpture and architectural drawing. His works expose the hidden geometries that shape structure, movement, and the spaces we inhabit.

Ibrahim Khatab works with the weathered posters pulled from Cairo’s streets, reactivating them through layered printmaking and collage. His surfaces speak to public voice, erasure, and the resilience of collective memory.

Sahlah Davids builds intimate, symbolic compositions using fabric, pins, and brooches. Her works draw on personal mythology, womanhood, and inherited narratives, creating quiet but potent reflections on identity and ritual.

Loyiso Mkize contributes bold figurative paintings that assert presence and self-definition. Drawing from both classical and contemporary visual languages, his works centre the Black figure with clarity and conviction.

Together, these artists chart a multifaceted view of contemporary practice, material as memory, structure as language, and image as assertion.
